So basically what I have for my guy right now is that he's an on-the-road freelance journalist who runs his own sort of cryptid/supernatural podcast. Lives out of his car, backpack, tent, motels, etc. depending on the surroundings. Charges his devices at McDonalds, hipster coffee shops, and rest stops. He's objective in his stances over the "air" and in his publications, but in reality he's driven by wanting some kind of concrete answer.

The dude basically has Mulder-syndrome in the sense that his father disappeared when he was younger. His mom and his dad got along, there was no dysfunction or reason for the man to leave. He just up and vanished one day. Went down to the basement to his workshop and five hours later, when it was time for dinner, he never came back up. Nobody has seen him since. The investigation went on for years, the police cross-referencing it with other missing person's cases and active crimes, but to no avail.

When muh man here got word of some of the lore surrounding his area (and I'm gonna start figuring out which thing that is specifically soon... I've got some ideas but it'll probably be actual existing cryptid lore of some kind/urban legends of some sort OR you and I could figure something out as that's gonna sort of be the very heart of his drive for finding answers), he began to wonder if maybe, just maybe, that could have been the answer. He wouldn't say that he is a "believer" or even that he "wants to believe" but he wants there to be an answer of some kind. And if the supernatural do exist, well then hey, maybe that would explain his father's disappearence.

GRANTED, all that shit is internalized and not something anyone outside of his mom would know. Meanwhile, his mom is somebody who FULLY believes in the supernatural but more on a level of "that shit is cursed and dangerous stay away from it and your father was a good man AND WOULD NEVER BE TOUCHED BY THE UNHOLY" rara. But she's very much not in support of this my guy's shenanigans.

Anyway, he went through uni, got his degree in human anthropology mainly just to appease his mother, all whilst starting his podcast. I'm gonna say he probably went to school upstate at that point and dicked around with his friends doing mini-investigations but nothing seriously invested. It was in his own personal free time, that he did deep dives on lore and began creating a "map" of everywhere he could think of post-uni.

Which brings him to where he is now, some 1-2 years later, his podcast and blog still going strong, he's on the road. Gonna figure out the events leading up this point eventuallyyyyy but he's basically on a search for the truth and has so far, come up empty handed. He can spin a good story for his readers and listeners, enough to make bank, but when it comes to his own personal beliefs and actual, solid, concrete evidence, he's still not convinced.

ok but i'm gonna come back to this when i wake up and am smarter because HELLO YES THIS IS EXCELLENT. i already rambled some eli stuff at you and i think it'd be a lot of fun to like mesh and world build some big existential horror something that ties back into the way cryptids and shit get interpreted in our world? i can't tell if that makes sense. OH WELL.

i gotta tell you more about the bigger concept of the universe eli and ren and my other oc sarah exist in but for right now you should tell me your thoughts on timelines that melt into each other, gods of chaos with daddy problems, and the impending apocalypse?

YEAH i was definitely thinking about cryptids being related to a much bigger picture, whether they be spawn of something else or cosmic leakage from a wormhole to another world blah blah blah, bc then we can tie in a bit more of time/space shenanigans. I GET WHAT YOU MEAN I THINK. that was kind of what i'd been gunning for anyway.

so yeah timeline wise i mean my bruh (i gotta give him a name i'm working on it) could probably be closing in on something a lot bigger than he's been used to in the past. and he'd even probably be expressing this on the podcast, expressing genuine excitement/fear/awe etc. as he comes closer to actually finding something worth... finding. but that could be a BIG OL' CAN OF WORMS HE DOESN'T REALIZE/ISN'T PREPARED to handle.

i'd assume, since i'm gonna go with him being older now, that he's probably been keeping some kind of journal of the research he's been doing. scaps of primary sources and notes from folks he's interviewed, reformed cult members who were once invested in worship, etc. so he'd have some idea of "lore" but only in the journalistic sense. if some actual pro slapped him upside the head with the hard truth he'd be like BUT BUT BUT this is what I LEARNED. RU TELLIN ME IT'S NOT.

TOMORROW NIGHT I am coming back to this with actual suggestions and ideas for this whole thing because like SPACETIME and the stuff you've got written up for him now and just like, everything. there's potential for some really interesting shit on like a wicked high level depending how mindbreaking we feel like going with it. i just really love shit where someone who's super deep into knowing what's going on finds someone with NO CLUE and there's that balance to find between how much should be told and how much might actually crumple their sanity.

i guess it kinda depends the best way to structure it? like do we want to have a loose idea of what the bbeg is and roll it back or do we maybe want to go full sandbox almost gpsl on it with like rico and whoever else? part of me kinda digs the idea of like, building out an actual rpg "party" but that could just be the part of my brain that misses games where characters all exist in the same timeline

OR DO THEY in this case oh shit that could be interesting to play with if we wanna get real fucky with timelines and realities.

YEAH YEAH TAKE YO TIME. i'll work on setting the sandbox up now even though i'm like half functional. you and i could feasibly do some threading and then just transfer it over once we got our crew together. and maybe for now we can hold off on the bbeg until those who wanna be involved in a overreaching plot chime in. TBH it's up to you. idk if i can follow a fast moving plot heavy thing rn if people are boomeranging in the long run but if it's slower, then i'm def in.

so i like the idea of him ending up on this whole path towards things he's not supposed to know -- likely he's experienced a lot of weird shit?? enough that he's been tapped as someone to keep on eye on or possibly something where he's already been involved in shit going on with whatever agency and he doesn't even realize he was. then something happens, some specific event -- the campground?? and that's when they're like WHOA HEY BUDDY HEY HI THIS IS YOUR NEW FRIEND JOE HE'S GONNA HANG OUT WITH YOU except it's just ~~eli~~ joe turning up at whatever setup totally playing it chill as fuck and trying to find out what he knows and trying even harder to keep him from digging any deeper. only THAT'S NOT HOW SHIT WORKS YA FEEL

YES that totally works and is kind of the idea i was vibing with too. and yeah the campground can be something bigger and badder than he's used to but he just keeps stepping knee deep in shit without realizing it. only this time it's knee deep in a extraterrestrial snake pit.
